The library is—along with the kitchen—the heart of the brick building in Arnhem that has housed the Werkplaats Typografie since 1998, though it originally served as a radio distribution station. It is not only a repository of wide-ranging knowledge but also a beloved gathering place. After some time, I began to take over my predecessors’ habit and, whenever the opportunity arose, take a seat on the built-in bookshelf in the left-hand corner.

As I was researching concepts of utopia(nism) and beginning to reflect on the specific nature of different perspectives, I pondered how this space high up in the library could be explored. I chose a handful of bouldering holds, which I attached to the bookshelf wall.

The “problem”—as the arrangement of holds is called in bouldering jargon—now situated in the middle of the library seems to raise a series of questions of its own: questions about utopian ideas, their accessibility, and fall heights. I read a list of these open questions aloud on the day of the annual presentation “Your Work in Your Work” while sitting on the shelf.
